In November 2020, I heard the words no one wants to hear:
“You have breast cancer.”
I was 53. Successful business owner. Active. Healthy. Or so I thought.
The standard protocol was clear: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation. But something inside me said there had to be another way.
I made a decision that shocked my doctors, scared my family, and ultimately changed my life:
I chose to skip chemo and radiation.
Instead, I committed to a holistic path—rigorous nutrition protocols, stress management, movement therapy, and complete lifestyle transformation.
Today, at 58, I’m cancer-free. And I’m stronger than I was at 40.
This Isn’t a Post About Rejecting Medicine
Let me be clear: I’m not a doctor. I’m not telling you to refuse treatment.
Every cancer journey is different. Every body is different. You must make the choice that’s right for YOU, with the guidance of medical professionals you trust.
But what I AM saying is this:
The body has an incredible capacity to heal when you give it the right environment.
And whether you’re battling cancer, recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or simply trying to age with strength and dignity—the principles are the same.
What I Learned on My Healing Journey
- Movement Is Medicine
Not intense, punishing workouts. Intentional, restorative movement.
During my recovery, I trained 4-5 days a week—but every session was designed to:
- Reduce inflammation
- Support lymphatic drainage
- Build lean muscle (which boosts immune function)
- Regulate my nervous system
I didn’t lift to look good. I lifted to survive.
And it worked.
Research shows that strength training:
- Reduces cancer recurrence by up to 40%
- Improves survival rates in breast cancer patients
- Boosts immune function and reduces inflammation
Movement isn’t optional. It’s foundational.
- Food Is Information, Not Just Fuel
I studied anti-inflammatory nutrition like my life depended on it. Because it did.
I eliminated:
- Processed foods
- Refined sugar
- Inflammatory oils
- Excess animal products
I focused on:
- Dark leafy greens (alkaline, nutrient-dense)
- Omega-3 rich foods (wild salmon, walnuts, flaxseed)
- Antioxidant-rich berries and vegetables
- Hydration (half my body weight in ounces daily)
Within 8 weeks, my inflammation markers dropped significantly. My energy returned. My sleep improved. My body started to heal.
Food isn’t just calories. It’s communication with your cells.
Every bite you take is either building health or feeding disease.
- Stress Is the Silent Killer
Chronic stress elevates cortisol. High cortisol suppresses immune function, increases inflammation, and literally feeds cancer cells.
I had to learn to:
- Regulate my nervous system (breathwork, meditation, sauna therapy)
- Prioritize sleep (7-8 hours, non-negotiable)
- Set boundaries (saying no to obligations that drained me)
- Release control (trusting my body’s wisdom)
The hardest part of healing wasn’t physical. It was mental and emotional.
Learning to give my body permission to rest. To recover. To heal.
- You Can’t Outwork a Toxic Lifestyle
I’ve been working out since I was 18. I thought I was “healthy.”
But I was:
- Sleeping 5-6 hours a night
- Running a high-stress business
- Eating on the go
- Ignoring my body’s warning signs
Cancer was my wake-up call.
It forced me to realize: fitness isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how your body functions.
You can have visible abs and still be metabolically broken. You can run marathons and still have chronic inflammation. You can be “fit” and still get sick.
True health is holistic. Movement. Nutrition. Sleep. Stress management. Recovery.
All of it matters.
Why I’m Sharing This
After I recovered, I moved to Asheville, NC in 2021. I wanted to hike. To walk. To be surrounded by a community that valued wellness as much as I did.
But when I looked for a training studio that understood MY needs—as an active 50+ woman recovering from a health crisis—I couldn’t find it.
So I built it.
In February 2025, I opened PeakFit Studio—a boutique wellness studio designed specifically for active adults 50-80 who refuse to let age or health challenges define their limits.
We focus on:
- Personalized strength training (not generic group classes)
- Anti-inflammatory nutrition
- Recovery modalities (infrared sauna, red light therapy)
- Nervous system regulation
Because I’ve lived it. I know what works.
The Truth About Aging
Here’s what most people get wrong about getting older:
Aging doesn’t make you weak. Inactivity does. Aging doesn’t cause pain. Inflammation does. Aging doesn’t mean decline. Neglect does.
I’m 57 and I’m stronger now than I was at 40. I hike 5+ miles without pain. I sleep 7-8 hours and wake up energized. I have more muscle mass than I did in my 30s.
This isn’t genetics. This isn’t luck.
This is what happens when you:
- Train smart, not hard
- Eat to reduce inflammation
- Prioritize recovery
- Give your body what it needs to thrive
My Challenge to You
If you’re reading this and you’re:
- Dealing with a health crisis
- Recovering from surgery or injury
- Noticing your body “slowing down”
- Afraid of becoming frail or dependent
- Simply tired of feeling tired
I want you to know: You have more control than you think.
You can’t control everything. But you CAN control:
- What you eat
- How you move
- How you manage stress
- How you prioritize sleep
And those four things? They change everything.
