Marilyn’s Story: At 82, She Joined PEAKFIT to Lift Her Own Carry-On

Arden’s Only Private Personal Training Studio for Adults 40+

Marilyn had a very specific goal when she walked into PEAKFIT Studio.

She travels. A lot. And she was tired of needing help lifting her carry-on bag into the overhead bin. At 82 years old, she decided that wasn’t something she was willing to accept — and she did something about it.

That decision led her to PEAKFIT Studio in Arden, NC, where she became one of our most inspiring members. Her story isn’t about dramatic physical transformation or athletic achievement. It’s about something more fundamental: the refusal to let age quietly take away the things that matter to you.

The Problem With “Just Getting Older”

There’s a narrative that gets handed to people as they age: that weakness, dependence, and physical limitation are simply what getting older looks like. That at some point, you stop building and start managing decline.

Marilyn didn’t accept that narrative. And the science doesn’t support it either.

Research consistently shows that adults in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s respond to progressive strength training. Muscle can be built at any age. Functional strength — the kind that lets you lift, carry, climb, and move through daily life with confidence — can be developed and maintained well into your 80s with the right program and the right coaching.

The key word is right. Not every training environment is equipped to work with an 82-year-old. Not every trainer knows how to build a program that challenges without risking injury, that progresses without overwhelming, that respects the body’s history while pushing its potential.

PEAKFIT was built for exactly this.

What Marilyn’s Training Looks Like

Marilyn trains in PEAKFIT’s small group personal training program — up to 6 members per session, each with their own individualized program, coached by a certified trainer who knows her history, her goals, and her limits.

Her program started with a thorough movement assessment and InBody body composition scan. From there, her trainer built a progressive strength program focused on the functional movements that matter most for her goals: upper body pressing and pulling strength (for the carry-on), lower body stability and power (for navigating airports, stairs, and uneven terrain), and core stability (for everything).

Every session is supervised. Every progression is deliberate. And every month, her InBody scan shows the measurable changes in her muscle mass, body fat, and metabolic baseline — so she can see exactly what her consistency is producing.

What She’s Achieved

Marilyn can lift her carry-on. That was the goal, and she reached it.

But what she’s gained goes beyond that one moment in an airport. She’s stronger. She moves with more confidence. She recovers faster from the physical demands of travel. And she’s demonstrated — to herself and to everyone who knows her — that 82 is not a ceiling.

“True vitality is not built from pushing harder,” reads one of the core principles of the PEAKFIT 360 Approach. “It is built from learning how to recharge deeper.” Marilyn embodies this. She trains consistently, recovers intentionally, and shows up with the kind of commitment that produces real, lasting results.

Watch Marilyn’s Story

We captured Marilyn’s story on video — in her own words, about why she joined, what she’s experienced, and what she’d say to someone her age who’s thinking about starting. It’s worth watching.
